RE: Bill No. 7017, An Act Concerning Student Data Privacy
Dear Representative or Senator:
I am writing to you in support of Bill No. 7017, An Act Concerning Student Data Privacy. This bill has gained unanimous bipartisan support in the Education Committee and will presented to the General Assembly and Senate this session. I urge you to support Bill No. 7017 and vote “Yes” in support of childrens’ educational futures.
I am very concerned about my child’s educational record and online data given that the Family Educational Right and Privacy Act (FERPA) was amended in 2011 and no longer requires my permission for the sharing of data with entities outside of my local school district. In addition, I understand that State Wide Longitudinal Databases are being built that will collect my child’s data, as well as share it with other entities without my knowledge or permission. Furthermore, children are required to partake in online digital learning where more data is being collected about them and used by private companies, again without my knowledge or consent.
Twenty other states have passed 28 data privacy bills into law. It is time for Connecticut to join these states.
Please vote “Yes” on Bill No. 7017 and help to protect innocent children and give them the chances and opportunities they deserve without being labeled and data mined to a damaging degree.
Respectfully submitted,
Jane Doe
